What is Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (AME)?
Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (AME) is a DGCA-licensed aviation program. It trains engineers to inspect, maintain, and certify aircraft for safe flight. Every aircraft in India must be cleared by a licensed AME before take-off. This makes AME professionals legally accountable for passenger safety.
Unlike traditional engineering, AME is a license-based technical career in aviation. The DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) regulates all AME programs in India. To pursue an AME course in India, candidates must meet DGCA eligibility standards.
Candidates must be medically fit and must not have colour blindness. AME programs at Alpine Institute of Aeronautics are approved for Categories A1, B1.1, B1.2, B1.3, and B2. Admission may also require qualifying the AME CEE or CUET entrance examination.
Category A1 is a short-term DGCA-approved AME program lasting 800 hours (1 year). It covers foundational aircraft maintenance skills for line maintenance tasks. Students take a computer-based MCQ exam by DGCA’s Central Examination Office.
AME B1.1 is a 2-year program (2400 hours) focused on turbine aircraft maintenance. This covers engine overhaul, structural repair, hydraulics, and landing gear systems. It is one of the most in-demand AME licenses for IndiGo, Air India, and MRO firms.

Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (AME) offers one of aviation’s most stable salary structures. Freshers with a DGCA AME license earn between ₹3 lakh to ₹8 lakh per annum. Mid-level licensed AMEs can expect ₹8 lakh to ₹15 lakh per annum. Senior AMEs and those in MRO leadership roles can earn ₹15 lakh+ annually.
At airlines like Air India, monthly pay for AMEs ranges from ₹50,000 to ₹1,00,000. IndiGo offers competitive packages between ₹40,000 to ₹90,000 per month. Internationally, licensed AMEs can earn USD 50,000+, making it globally attractive.
