Types of Pilot Training Scholarships in India

Scholarships for aviation students fall into 5 broad categories. Each has different eligibility, coverage, and application timelines.

1. Central government scholarships

The Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment runs two key schemes:

  • NSP Post-Matric Scholarship for SC students:
    • Eligibility:  SC students with family’s annual income of up to Rs 2.50 lakh per annum.
    • Scholarship:
      • Compulsory non-refundable fees including tuition fee, as fixed by the Fee Fixation/Rationalization Committee of the State Government
      • Academic allowance
    • Portal: Apply via scholarships.gov.in.
  • Post-Matric Scholarship for OBC students: same structure as the SC scheme.
    • Eligibility: OBC candidates whose parents’/guardians’ income from all sources does not exceed Rs. 1 lakh per annum.
    • Scholarship:
      • Rs.5000/- per flying hour in single/multiengine aircraft for 200 hours.
      • Maintenance allowance

These are among the most substantial pilot scholarships in India for reserved category students.

2. State government scholarships

  • Maharashtra MahaJyoti / Rajiv Gandhi Aviation Academy:
    • Eligibility: OBC, Denotified Tribes (VJNT), and Special Backward Classes (SBC) in Maharashtra.
      • Domicile students
      • Age: 18-28 Years
    • Scholarship: up to 100% subsidy on pilot training fees.
    • Flying Training: 18 months training at Nagpur Flying Club
  • Kerala Government Scheme: WINGS (Skill development programme in Aviation field)
    • Eligibility: ST domicile students
    • Scholarship: Covers course fee, accommodation and travel facilities during the course & help with essential expenses

Check your state’s Social Welfare or Higher Education department for similar schemes. Several states have aviation-specific provisions.

3. Institutional scholarship: IGRUA

IGRUA Pilot Scholarship for SC/OBC/EBC/DNT scholarships via the National Scholarship Portal for students in its CPL programme. It does not offer general fee waivers, but reserved-category candidates can apply through NSP before admission.

4. Merit-based private scholarships

  • JRD Tata Scholarship: partial or full financial support for aspiring pilots and engineers. Highly competitive, based on academic merit and financial need.
  • Captain Aviation Academy “Sapno Ki Udaan” Scholarship:

5. Airline-sponsored cadet programmes

Airlines offer some of the highest-value pilot scholarships in India, often with a bond to join the airline post-training.

What Do Pilot Training Scholarships Cover?

Depending on the scholarship, financial aid can include:

  • Flight training hours (flying cost per hour)
  • Ground school and DGCA exam fees
  • Simulator training
  • Medical examination fees
  • Maintenance and living allowance

Eligibility: What Most Pilot Scholarships Require

Common criteria across scholarship programmes for pilots:

  • Indian citizen, minimum 17–18 years old
  • 10+2 with Physics and Mathematics (minimum 50–60%)
  • Valid DGCA Class I or Class II Medical Certificate
  • Enrolled in or seeking admission to a DGCA-approved Flying Training Organisation (FTO)
  • Some schemes require SC/ST/OBC/EWS category proof

Documents You’ll Need To Apply

Keep these ready before you begin any application:

  • 10th and 12th mark sheets
  • DGCA Class I or II Medical Certificate
  • Category certificate (SC/ST/OBC/EWS, if applicable)
  • Income certificate (for means-based scholarships)
  • Identity and address proof (Aadhaar/Passport)
  • Statement of purpose or motivation letter
  • Letters of recommendation (for competitive private scholarships)
  • Admission confirmation from a DGCA-approved FTO

Should you take an education loan alongside a scholarship?

Yes. Scholarships rarely cover 100% of CPL costs. Nationalised banks like SBI and Bank of Baroda offer aviation education loans up to ₹1.5 crore with DGCA-approved FTO documentation. Combining a scholarship with a loan dramatically reduces your repayment burden.

How To Find and Apply for Aviation Scholarships: 5 Practical Steps

  1. Start early: Most scholarships open 3–6 months before the academic year. Missing a deadline means waiting another year.
  2. Check NSP first: lists all central and most state government aviation scholarships in one place.
  3. Apply to multiple scholarships: You can apply to more than one. Just check individual terms for restrictions on stacking benefits.
  4. Keep your academics strong: Most merit-based pilot scholarships have minimum academic cut-offs. A 60%+ aggregate improves your chances significantly.
  5. Prepare your DGCA theory early: Several scholarships are tied to ground school performance. Strong DGCA exam scores directly improve your scholarship eligibility.

It's the best aviation academy for pilot training. I enrolled a few months ago, and I can proudly vouch that no other academy teaches a correct attitude of learning and development. FMS not only focuses on concept clearance but also CRM skills and discusses Aircraft Accident Investigations to understand the roles and responsibilities of airline pilots at a very initial stage.
