If you are planning to become a pilot in India, your journey begins with the DGCA Class 2 Medical Examination. This is the first mandatory step before applying for a Student Pilot License (SPL).
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) ensures that only medically fit candidates can pursue flying. Many students feel anxious about the process, but with the right preparation and guidance, it’s straightforward.

At FMS Aviation Academy, we guide students step by step so that their DGCA medicals are completed smoothly and without delays. In this blog, you’ll learn the entire process of DGCA Class 2 Medicals – from booking to receiving your fitness certificate.
The Class 2 Medical Examination is the initial health assessment conducted by DGCA-approved medical examiners. It ensures that aspiring pilots meet the required physical and mental fitness standards before flying an aircraft.
This medical is mandatory for:
Applying for a Computer Number (DGCA registration ID)
Getting a Student Pilot License (SPL)
Beginning Pilot Training
Visit the DGCA eGCA website to see the list of approved Class 2 Medical Examiners.
Examiners are available in major cities across India like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Kolkata.
Choose the nearest examiner and book an appointment directly with them.
Contact the examiner via phone/email to schedule a slot.
Some examiners require advance booking due to high demand.
Confirm the list of tests they conduct and their fees (₹2,000–₹5,000).
Before the appointment, gather these documents:
Aadhaar card / Passport (ID proof)
10th certificate (proof of Date of Birth)
Two recent passport-size photographs
Filled CA-35 Medical Form (available on DGCA site)
Previous medical records (if any)
On the day of the examination, the examiner will conduct a series of tests:
Physical Examination – height, weight, blood pressure, pulse
Eye Test – visual acuity, color vision, depth perception
Hearing Test – conversational range check, audiometry (if required)
Blood & Urine Tests – sugar levels, hemogram, general health markers
ECG (Electrocardiogram) – checks heart health
Chest X-ray – sometimes required depending on examiner
Tip from FMS: Get a routine eye check-up beforehand to rule out color blindness or major vision issues.
After completing the examination, the medical examiner uploads your reports on the DGCA eGCA portal.
The examiner may give you a hard copy of your test results for personal records.
DGCA’s medical board reviews your uploaded medical results.
If everything is clear, they issue your CML (Computerized Medical Certificate/Assessment).
This certificate states whether you are “Fit” or “Unfit” for flying.
Once approved, your medical assessment is available for download from the eGCA portal.
This is your official DGCA Class 2 Medical Certificate.
With this certificate, you can apply for your Computer Number and start flying training.
Under 40 years: Valid for 24 months
Above 40 years: Valid for 12 months
Must be renewed before expiry if you plan to continue flying.
The fees vary by examiner and city:
Range: ₹2,000 – ₹5,000
Additional costs: Chest X-ray, ECG, or specialized tests (if required).
Incomplete documents (missing DOB proof, ID)
Eye issues (uncorrected vision, color blindness)
High BMI or obesity-related health risks
High blood pressure or abnormal ECG
Chronic illnesses (diabetes, epilepsy, psychiatric conditions)
💡 Tip from FMS: If you have a medical history (like asthma, minor surgery, or chronic conditions), carry all medical records to avoid unnecessary delays.
