Educational Qualification for Pilot in India

The minimum educational requirement to become a pilot in India is 10+2. Physics and Mathematics are compulsory subjects under DGCA rules. DGCA does not mandate a minimum percentage for CPL eligibility. However, most Flying Training Organisations (FTOs) expect at least 50% aggregate.

Strong fundamentals in Physics and Maths directly help in DGCA ground subjects. Air Navigation and Technical General both rely heavily on these two subjects.

Can Commerce or Arts Students Become Pilots in India?

Is There a Minimum Percentage for Pilot Training?

DGCA does not specify a minimum percentage in its CPL eligibility criteria. However, clearing DGCA exams requires a minimum score of 70% in each subject. Strong academic preparation at the ground school stage is therefore essential.

Age Requirements for Pilot Licence in India

Different pilot licences carry different minimum age criteria under DGCA rules. There is no upper age limit prescribed by DGCA for starting pilot training. Airlines, however, generally prefer younger candidates for long-term career placement.

LicenceMinimum AgePurpose
Student Pilot Licence (SPL)16 yearsBegin solo flying and ground training
Private Pilot Licence (PPL)17 yearsNon-commercial flying privileges
Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL)18 yearsFly commercially, required for airline career
Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL)21 yearsCommand of commercial airline aircraft

The CPL is the licence required to work as a professional pilot in India. Most aspirants aim to complete CPL training between ages 18 and 24.

DGCA Medical Requirements for Pilots: Class 1 and Class 2

Medical fitness is the most critical factor in pilot eligibility in India. It is also the one requirement that cannot be substituted or deferred. Get your DGCA medical done before spending on any training or course fees.

Flying Hours Required for DGCA CPL in India

DGCA mandates a minimum of 200 flying hours to be eligible for a CPL. These hours must be logged on a DGCA-approved aircraft at a licensed FTO. Of the 200 hours, a portion must include solo flying and cross-country flights.

Hour TypeRequirement
Total flying hoursMinimum 200 hours
Solo flying hoursSpecified under DGCA Schedule XI
Cross-country hoursMinimum as per DGCA CAR Section 7
Instrument flyingRequired hours on instruments

Completing 200 hours typically takes 18 to 24 months at a full-time FTO. Weather, aircraft availability, and training location affect the actual timeline.

Nationality and Documentation Requirements

To obtain a CPL in India, the applicant must be an Indian citizen. Foreign nationals can train in India but require prior DGCA approval and valid documentation.

Documents required for DGCA registration include:

  • Aadhaar card or valid Indian passport
  • 10+2 mark sheet and passing certificate
  • Birth certificate
  • DGCA Class 2 Medical Certificate
  • Passport-size photographs

All of these documents are submitted when registering on the eGCA portal. The DGCA Computer Number issued after registration is used for all exam applications.

How to Register on the eGCA Portal

The eGCA portal is the DGCA’s official platform for all pilot licensing. Every aspirant must register and obtain a DGCA Computer Number before sitting any exam. Without a Computer Number, no DGCA exam application can be submitted.

Read Step-by-step eGCA registration guidance by FMS:
eGCA Login and DGCA Computer Number Guide.

English Language Proficiency for Pilots

English language proficiency is a mandatory requirement under ICAO and DGCA rules. All ATC communication in India and internationally is conducted in English. All DGCA theory exams are written and evaluated in English.

ICAO Language Proficiency Level 4 is the minimum required for CPL issuance. This is assessed separately and must remain current throughout your flying career.

Most aspirants who have studied in English-medium schools have no difficulty here. If English is a concern, structured preparation during ground school with FMS Aviation Academy will address this.

Pilot Eligibility: What If You Don't Meet One Requirement?

No Physics or Maths in 12th? — NIOS Route

You can complete Physics and Mathematics through NIOS. DGCA officially accepts NIOS qualifications for CPL eligibility.

Failed DGCA Medical? — Review and Reconsideration

A failed Class 1 Medical is not always the end of your pilot career. Temporary unfitness due to illness or correctable conditions can be re-evaluated. You can approach the Central Medical Establishment (CME) of DGCA for a review. Certain conditions reconsidered with specialist reports and proper documentation.

Colour blindness and permanent cardiovascular conditions are typically disqualifying. Speak with a DGCA-approved Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) before concluding anything.

Under 18? — Start Now, Apply for CPL Later

You can begin ground training from age 17 with a PPL. You can register on eGCA and begin DGCA ground classes before turning 18. Use this time to clear ground exams and complete SPL/PPL flying hours. Many students who start early are CPL-ready by age 20 or 21.

It's the best aviation academy for pilot training. I enrolled a few months ago, and I can proudly vouch that no other academy teaches a correct attitude of learning and development. FMS not only focuses on concept clearance but also CRM skills and discusses Aircraft Accident Investigations to understand the roles and responsibilities of airline pilots at a very initial stage.
